Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA)

Read more...DIA (Defence Intelligence Agency) is an institution which is organized and operates as a structure at the general directorate level in the Ministry of Defence, with dependent structures in the areas where the Armed Forces conduct their activity, inside the country and abroad. DIA is directly subordinate to the Minister of Defence. DIA is a consolidated agency that operates in the field of defence, as active part of the Armed Forces. It supports the Armed Forces missions in the framework of NATO, EU and UN. The Defence Intelligence Agency is part of the NATO Intelligence Boards and Working Group on Intelligence, Counterintelligence and Security. It has regular cooperation relationships with all NATO intelligence agencies, as well as bilateral and multilateral relations with a considerable number of intelligence services in the country, in the region and beyond. The Defence Intelligence Agency, as part of the Ministry of Defence, was formally established by the Law no. 117, dated 13.12.2012, “On the Defence Intelligence Agency”, as a continuation of the Military Intelligence Service, which was officially established on 11.12.1991.

This agency is characterized by the following features:

a)    Depoliticization.
b)    Operation with unique and centralized organization.
c)    Extension of its activities both inside and outside the country.
d)    The agency has its own emblem and flag.
e)    The principle of control by the Parliament, Prime Minister and Minister of Defence.

Defence Intelligence Agency mission

The Defence Intelligence Agency mission is:

a) The support of the Armed Forces, of the Executive Authorities, and of the Strategic Command of the Armed Forces with intelligence and counterintelligence product on security, on the strategic and operational level, in times of peace, war, crisis, in states of emergency or natural disaster;

b) The identification, collection, assessment of information on activities which aim to infringe or infringe the Armed Forces in carrying out their mission for the safety of the country’s independence, defence of territorial integrity and its constitutional order, as well as for possible threats and risks toward the Armed Forces inside the country and abroad. The Defence Intelligence Agency accomplishes its mission through the assessment of multiple resources, human intelligence, counterintelligence, security and signal intelligence.

Mission

Military Intelligence Service supports the Armed Forces and authorities of leadership and its strategic commanding with intelligence, counterintelligence and security information, at a strategic and operational level in time of peace, war or crises.
MIS collects, analyses and identifies data on the activity that threatens the national security, possible threats and dangers to the Armed Forces, that come from abroad and/or appear in the country.
